The Two Sheds Review: Ultimate Challenge UK Dynamite

October 30th, 2009 twoshed No comments

Mixed martial arts is on the agenda again as we take a look at the latest offering from Ultimate Challenge UK, Dynamite, held at the Troxy in London and shown on a three day delay on Sky Sports here in Britain. The show was hosted by O.J. Borg and Dave O’Donnell, with Andy Walker and Rob Nutley handling commentary duties.

The broadcast began with welterweight action, and Alberto Mina facing Edgelson Lua for the Welterweight title. Two good performances in this relatively short fight, with Lua looking good as he defending Mina’s early take down attempts. It wasn’t long before Mina got his wish though, as he took Lua down to the ground and showed some great transitions before he locked in an arm bar for the submission victory. Nice way to kick off the show.

The welterweight action continued with former Ultimate Fighter contestant Dean Amasinger taking on Scott Jansen. Amasinger looked tremendous here, quickly taking Jansen down and getting side control. Seconds later he had the win, courtesy of an arm triangle. The time, just forty-four seconds. Very good performance from Amasinger here, even though I forgot to use my blink and you’ll miss it affair line.

Then it was down to the lightweight division as Abdul Mohammad faced Jason Young. This proved to be another enjoyable fight. Both men had their moments in the first fight on the show to make it past the first round, but as time went on Young began to assert himself more. With the fight going the three round distance, the judges were called on to make their decision, and they gave their respective nods to Young. A decision you definitely couldn’t argue with.

The usually watchable Tom “Kong” Watson was up next, defending his middleweight title against Denniston Sutherland. This was the second fight to go the distance, and although it featured some good action, it just seemed to lack that certain something, that little spark that usually make Watson fights great. Both men just seemed to cancel each other out, which was probably why the judges gave a split decision to Watson.

The main event featured the Goliath himself, Neil Grove, defending his Heavyweight title against Martin Thompson. Young Thompson looked dwarfed the massive Grove, and the champion used his size advantage to good effect, dropping Thompson with a big right hand before delivering the coup de grace with the ground and pound, knocking his man out. The referee wisely stepped in, giving Grove the title retaining win in just fifty-three seconds, giving us viewers our second blink and you’ll miss it affair of the night. See, I did manage to get that line in!

In conclusion – four out of five great fights made for a good showing, and another example of how Ultimate Challenge UK is the leading lights in British mixed martial arts at the moment. And you know what the great thing about this show was? Absolutely no mention of Katie Price and Alex Reid, proving that Dave O’Donnell and his crew don’t need to turn their product in a circus sideshow to draw in the punters. Nice work Dave.

BOXER JOE CALZAGHE VS CAGE FIGHTER ALEX REID

October 29th, 2009 Duane No comments

Cage fighter Alex Reid and glamourous girlfriend Katie Price.

Strictly star Joe Calzaghe says he’ll fight Jordan’s cross-dressing boyfriend Alex Reid for Peter Andre.

Joe Calzaghe says he’ll take on Katie Price’s cagefighting boyfriend Alex Reid in the ring to defend the honour of her ex Peter Andre.

Talking yesterday on Welsh radio station Red Dragon, the boxing legend

Chatting to show hosts Kam and Sally on the Breakfast Show, he said: “Of course I’d do it. As long as he doesn’t take me to ground – no kicking allowed – I’d definitely take him out. I’d be too quick

“I’d do it if he paid me, but I’m very expensive (but) if the money’s right, I’ll come back and do it for him.”

Joe also revealed that he was totally disappointed to be voted off Strictly Come Dancing – but said that stage fright had got the better of him.

He said: “I was a bit gutted as I was really enjoying the training, but it’s nice to get a good night’s sleep for a change…as soon as the cameras come on I froze every single Saturday.

“All of a sudden, you just get on the dancefllor and you can’t handle it, it was completely outside my comfort zone and I think its showed. I am disappointed as I think I could have beaten a couple of those in the bottom in a danceoff, but my nerves got in the way.

He concluded: “It was a great experience, a once in a life time thing, but now I’m going to go back to the gym and do what I do best, punch some punchbags!”

Joe also confirmed that he was looking to launch a film career, but was waiting for the right script.

You can listen again to Joe’s interview on Red Dragon by via the Mirror website.

What about that then, Joe Calzaghe joins Team Andre. It’s funny just recently I thought this would be a great crowd puller if a trained fighter came forward representing Peter Andre but didn’t expect Welsh boxing legend Calzaghe to be the man.

So what are the chances of this fight actually taking place? Who knows, there seems to be new story everyday relating to man of the moment Alex Reid. The fight would be sure to be huge earner but what rules would be agreed for the contest? Calzaghe has the distinct advantage with the fists there is no doubt.  The question is would Calazaghe train in grappling?

Rogers Quotes:

“The hardest part has been having someone (camera persons) on the mat during training that I CAN’T hit. Normally, the rule is, if you’re on the mat, you’re fair game to get some.”

“It’s been fun to share my story. I feel that I am living the American success story. And I hope that others can take some level of inspiration from it.”

“I am really looking forward to seeing the show, but to be honest, I won’t be in the right frame of mind next week to really enjoy it.  I’ll have to go back and watch it in a couple of weeks to digest it all.”

“The film crew has been here for more than five days.  I tell you, it is a surreal experience to have the world watching you, watching me do what my fight team and I have been doing for five years in relative obscurity day in and day out. All of a sudden, to have my life become worthy of this attention is amazing, shocking almost.  But we are having fun with it.”

“We’ve had various training partners roll through the past few days and it’s been odd to explain what the cameras are doing here.  They aren’t expecting it. The first few days the crew was here, it was a bit suffocating. To have them shadow me through my every move, not just in training, but at home with my family, during meals, everywhere.  After a few days, though, I kind of got used to it.”

Roger’s trainer and manager, Mike Reilly , on training camp:

“Brett has evolved as a fighter. He’s always been a tremendous athlete but now he’s a more well-rounded fighter. He’s developed so much over the past year and especially in this camp.”

“He is working as hard as he ever has.  He is in better shape than ever, so I can now push him harder and expand the training to be much more complex.  All of this is possible because he’s evolving.”

“We have new wrinkles in training, new sparing partners and sessions.  With his striking in top form, I can have Brett focus on other facets of the game: grappling, submission defense, throws and kicks.  We are coming in from new angles, we found a new range.  We have taken conditioning to a new level.  Fedor is in for a shock.”
