Paul Nicholl – Savage Garage Fight Team Interview

September 25th, 2011 Duane No comments

What first got you into martial arts? How long have been training?

Hahaha second question first the official answer (the more easily believed one!) to this is since May 1991 the real answer is I’ve been training
in fighting ever since I can remember which is about 2 years old!! I have clear memories of being that young and playing, learning, training in fighting! Which nicely plays into the answer to the first question, again official answer is I used to watch Bruce Lee, the Water Margin and Monkey as I was growing up and they inspired me but to be honest I read a book called Dianetics a couple of years ago and in it the author talked about a person having a basic purpose and that they know this from a very young age, this made sense to me as I’d heard of football players, singers, dancers etc all doing what they do at a very young age but I didn’t know mine until a friend of mine who’d read the book asked me very strongly what I was doing when I was a child and the memory hit me suddenly of being taught fighting by a friend of my Dad’s, it was an amazing moment for me and now I can’t believe I didn’t spot it previously lol….thanks for listening to/reading that without yawning too much!! Lol

Which martial arts taken part in before doing Jui Jitsu Grappling?

Shotokan Karate and Tae kwon Do!

What or who inspired you to train in the art of Jui Jitsu?

I saw the UFC in 1995 and was obsessed from that moment, so like sooo many people Royce Gracie really!

As a no-Gi-Grappler do you still have belts for grading?

No I’ve done the belt thing before and to be honest it’s no guarantee of quality!

Did you previously learn wearing a Gi?

Yes I loved donning the white armour and may well indulge again someday, especially if a student of mine wants to compete in gi competitions, but for now it’s no-gi all the way!

Do you think there is a difference between combat sports and self defence on the streets? As a coach do you teach both?

Hell yeah anything that you see banned in competition you should use to defend yourself in the street, as they’re banned because of the amount of damage they can cause, of course you have to weigh up the situation yourself and be responsible for whatever you do to the person your facing, if it’s a situation where you could walk away but you fight then I think you’re probably going to pay for it somehow and not in a good way!

I have done and I make sure my students understand that sport MMA isn’t total street defence but can be useful in it!

Can you tell us about your club – Savage Garage and how it came about? Cool name and logo by the way Paul.

Why thank you sir:-)  Lol it’s fairly simple in that it originated in a garage and savage rhymed and fit nicely, to be honest it’s an ever so slightly tongue in cheek name, we’re of the Kazushi Sakuraba attitude where we take it seriously but with an element of humour, there’s sooo much macho B.S that goes on in the martial arts and I try to stay away from it as best I can however let me reiterate we train seriously and we do our best to win anything we compete in!

I hear your club is a hosting a Ryan Hall BJJ Seminar. What can the seminar attendees expect on the day?

Oh yeah I am soooo jazzed up for this seminar, the guy is phenomenal both in teaching and competing (and a great guy as well!!) expect your understanding of even basic techniques to be boosted to higher levels, there are very rare guys out there who know things the average guy doesn’t and can communicate them, Ryan Hall is one of those guys, we’re very lucky to have him here in the South of England!   Still spaces left ;-) …email or phone me for details: nicholl_paul25@hotmail.com  - 07906 151411

Are you a fan of the UFC and do you have a favourite fighter?

I love the UFC, my fave old time fighter is Marco Ruas, he was the first complete guy I think, he is also the only guy to make me wet myself….he choked me unconscious at a seminar back in 1997. I was in my don’t tap whatever phase back then and my bladder paid the price lol!

Nowadays I love GSP, Carlos Condit, Lyoto Machida, Maurilo Rua!

What other interests do you have outside of martial arts?

Helping my kids grow up with any vital info about life I think I missed out on when I was a kid! Studying Scientology, it’s been an incredible help to me in EVERY area of my life!

What’s your current favourite song?

Not sure about any current one’s I’m a classic rock fan, you can’t go wrong with AC/DC!!

Do you have any websites you would like to share?

No, it’s a disgrace I know but currently apart from my Facebook page we don’t have a website yet!! :-(  Feel free to friend up!

- Savage Garage Fight Team host Ryan Hall Submission Grappling Seminar, Wednesday October 12, 19.30-22.00, St Mary’s Sports Hall, Southampton, Hampshire.

BAMMA 5: Stav ‘The Crazy Bear’ Economou Interview

October 8th, 2010 Duane No comments

Stav 'The Crazy Bear' Economou.

Once again thanks to the amazing networking tool  - Facebook, bluraymma.com is treating you to another interview with a top UK MMA fighter.

If you saw BAMMA 4: Alex Reid vs Tom ‘Kong’ Watson (who didn’t?), you would have seen the announcement of promoters BAMMA flying in combat sports legend Bob ‘The Beast’ Sapp, for BAMMA 5 in December. The fighter booked to fight Sapp is non other than Stav ‘The Crazy Bear’ Economou, known as an Ultimate Challenge heavyweight competitor, via the exposure on Sky Sports.

What’s your current favourite song?

Hmm…I’ve got  couple at the moment. I’ve been listening to ‘Warrior’ B Disturbed and ‘Overthrow’ by Man of Kin, the latter will be my entrance music for my next fight.

How do you relax between training?

Nothing spectacular or anything, I might play on my XBox or just surf the net although recently watching Jersey Shore has taken over alot of my free time!

I noticed you are a fan of pro wrestling, who is your favourite wrestler?

C.M Punk

Who’s your favourite TNA Knockout or WWE Diva?

Too be honest womens wrestling really bores me (unless its Japanese womens wrestling) but I never skip the channel if the beautiful people are on!

How did you decide to become a mixed martial artist? How did you get started?

Well being a huge wrestling fan I first heard of the UFC from when guys like Ken Shamrock (and later Dan Severn)were wrestling. So when I heard about him going back to the UFC to fight Tito Ortiz at UFC 40 I waited till it came out on DVD, bought it and I was absolutely hooked.

You are an exciting figter to watch. Who are your favourite mixed martial artists, who inspires you?

I love watching fighters like Alistair Overeem, Brock Lesnar, Wanderlei Silva and Fedor.

This weekend you are fighting a K1 bout for UWC Garons Park, Southend On Sea. Are you primarily a standup fighter? Who is your opponent?

I’m primarily an MMA fighter so where ever the fight goes, on the ground or on my feet, im happy to be honest. I’m fighting a guy called Jason Dutton who recently fought for the ISKA Super-heavyweight title.

You are booked in to fight Bob Sapp at BAMMA 5 in December. Sapp is a huge name in the world of combat sports, how do you feel about stepping into the cage with someone of that status?

Well he could of fought almost anyone, anywhere and he was happy to fight me at BAMMA. I’m not sure if you could call that an honor but it’s certainly exciting!

Who will you be training with leading up to the December fight?

Well I’ve been training for my fight this Saturday so going into the fight with Bob Sapp my training will just continue.

Are there any specific areas you will train in preparation for ‘The Beast’?

Just going to make sure that my cardio and condition is the best that it can be.

Do you have a strategy for the fight?

My strategy is more or less to not lose.

Where do you see yourself ranking currently internationally?

I’ll let you know December 5th.

Bisping or Akiyama?

I like Akiyama and would like him to win but Bisping’s awesome cardio is going to win him the fight for sure.

Valesquez or Lesnar?

Brock Lesnar.

Do you have any websites you can recommend the fans visit?

UCMMA 15: Dave O’Donnell Interview

September 15th, 2010 Duane No comments

Match-maker extraordinaire: Dave O'Donnell

Ahead of UCMMA 15: Showdown, taking place at London’s Troxy, this Saturday – September 18, we were fortunate to grab a few words with match-maker extraordinaire and ever popular face of Ultimate Challenge Dave O’Donnell.

The interview works well as an introduction to those less familiar with UCMMA, plus in an incite into the world of the larger than life cage-fighting promoter.

What’s your current favourite song?

WE NO SPEAK AMERICANO

YOLANDA BE COOL VS D CUP

How do you relax in your spare time?

- As always I spent the whole weekend in my magical garden, watering plants and working out new ideas – it just really chills me out.

For MMA fans new to Ultimate Challenge, can you tell us who are your current champions and which upcoming competitors to look out for?

Current champions are:

Neil Grove – HW

Jimi Manuwa – LH

Mark Weir – MW

WW – (Maguire V Santana – to be decided this Sat at UCMMA 15)

LW – Michael Pastou

FW – Dave Lee

Look out for Nick ‘Head Hunter’ Chapman, who’s a great ambassador for the sport plus Djo Lema.

UCMMA 15: Showdown is loaded with 4 title fights, can you tell us a little about each one, so the readers know what to expect?

Smith V Sabet: This Superfight Title is a question of honour rematch. Kiane is seeking revenge, as last time he fought injured but this time he’s 100 per cent animal and ready for what Ben has to throw at him. Ben has said it’s just another day in the office for him and that the only reason he took the rematch is to set the record straight – Ben’s saying injury or no injury, it’s going be the same outcome. These are two big guys with honour at stake and only one of them is going to leave that cage with their head held high.

Pastou V Olivier – Olivier has been around since the beginning of time, he first fought on Cage Rage 1 and was the former undisputed FW champ at Cage Rage. He is now stepping up a weight to prove that he’s back bigger and stronger – the only thing that will be the deciding factor is that Pastou (who walks around at 84 kilos and cuts to an amazing 70) will be far too big and strong for the likes of poor little Robbie.

Maguire V Santana – Alberto Mina, our former WW champ has relinquished his title, as another one of our champs has moved to Bellator in the US (it seems that all our UCMMA champs do well – is it luck or is it the fact that we can pick a winner?) This will be a battle of BJJ and stamina – they are so evenly matched the one with the biggest heart will take this title.

Djo Lema V Elijah Grinell – these guys have sick striking and magical skills – but let’s see if they can pull it out of the bag on the night because Djo Lema is the real deal and you’ll need more than magic to beat him.

UCMMA cards feature UK1 kick-boxing bouts, I’m a big fan of these fast-paced exciting fights, it offers variety. Do you feel this makes UCMMA unique?

It’s not just the UK-1 fights that make UCMMA unique – it’s the whole show. It’s the production values, the atmosphere, the fighters – the entire experience which makes it a night to remember. We continue to have sell out shows that start on time and run smoothly – for pure fan entertainment. With dancing girls, fighter promos, entertainment and celebrities – not forgetting the amazing fights – UCMMA is unstoppable.

Something else unique about UCMMA 15 is for the first time ever fellow journalist – Mark Amor-Carling is to compete inside the cage. From what I hear Mark is a very brave man entering into MMA combat with just 12 weeks training. How has he got on in that time?

Mark has done extremely well – his attitude to pain and hard training is ‘the more the merrier’ – I’ve never known a guy to be more dedicated and make more MMA friends in such a short time. Will he win – who knows – but one things’ for sure – it’ll be the fight of his life.

Can you tell us the charity the fight is aid of ?

Carling’s raising money for the Kiyan Prince foundation - http://www.kiyan.org/ which was set up by former boxing champ Mark Prince.

Which match-up are you predicting to steal the show on September 18?

A really hard question – as every fight we put on has a lot of meaning. I don’t think one fight will steal the show but at least 4 will. If you’re unlucky enough not to get a ticket – tune into Sky Sports on Wednesday 22nd September to watch the drama unfold.

Former UCMMA fighters Alex Reid and Tom ‘Kong’ Watson are fighting this month for a different promotion, who do you predict winning?

A lot of people write off Alex but I’ve known him for years and have put him up against the toughest fighters the world has seen – everyone close to him knows that he’s been training for this fight – but it’s the first time that Alex will have gone 5 x 5 mins so that could be the deciding factor. I never like to sit on the fence, but this time I’m perched very high.

Do you see either fighter returning to compete for Ultimate Challenge in the near future?

I’ve spoken to both camps but who knows – this is the fight game. I’ve learnt one thing in my time, fighters come and go but the promotion will stay strong.

A-Team or The Expendables?

I’m proper old school so I liked The Expendables – but for entertainment value the A-Team just nicked it. But I will say one thing – it’s fantastic to see MMA fighters headline in both films- you couldn’t ask for more, MMA is mainstream!

Bisping or Akiyama?

Bisping – you’ve always got to go with your home boys.

Lesnar or Velasquez?

Lesnar – I like his style.
