MMA NOTES-
A heavyweight tilt between Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (30-11) and former EliteXC and Cage Rage fighter James Thompson (14-10) is now official for Sunday’s DREAM.12 event.

Joe Warren, previously announced as the opponent for Rumina Sato, has been scratched from the line-up of Vale Tudo Japan 2009 due to an injury. tore a ligament in his left knee while practicing submission defense with his teammates at Team Quest. Warren’s current teammate and fellow former UMich wrestler, Cory Grant, has stepped in to face Sato.

Returning to the UFC for the first time since a solid 3-1 run in the organization, Paul Buentello (27-10 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is faces fast-rising heavyweight prospect Todd Duffee (5-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in December at UFC 107; Penn vs. Sanchez. The fight is the first fight on the main card.

Former Abu Dhabi world champion Dean Lister signed a multi-fight deal last night with Maximum Fighting Championships and immediately agreed to meet Leites at MFC 23: “Unstoppable” on Friday, December 4 at the River Cree Resort and Casino.

The bout will be the main event of the fight card broadcast live throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico on HDNet Fights.

A UFC 106 bout has been struck from the night’s main card; welterweight Jon Fitch (19-3 MMA, 10-1 UFC) says opponent Ricardo Almeida (11-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) “blew out his knee” and was forced out of the event. Fitch made the announcement via Facebook and said he’ll get a “bigger fight instead,” – one “lots of you have been waiting for” – possibly on a later card. UFC 106 takes place Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and airs on pay-per-view.

A bout between rising middleweight contenders Wilson Gouveia (12-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) and Alan Belcher (14-6 MMA, 5-4 UFC) is set for UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez. Both men will look to rebound from losses their last time out in the Octagon.

UFC veteran Matt ‘Suave’ Horwich defeated fellow Octagon veteran Jason ‘The Punisher’ Lambert via split decision last night in the main event of Aggression MMA 1 that took place in Edmonton, Alberta. Lambert has now lost 5 straight fights while Horwich snapped a three fight losing streak.

Arena Rumble II, the first-ever World Class Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to come to Yakima Washington, will be held November 28th at 7 PM at the Yakima Sundome. The main event of Arena Rumble II will feature a lightweight bout between Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm (13-0) and Alonzo “Zo Diddy” Martinez (24-13-1).

Bellator Fighting Championships will shift from its original home on Spanish-language ESPN Deportes to FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo for the next two seasons, the U.S.-based mixed-martial- arts promotion today announced.Live events will air Thursday nights on FOX Sports Net affiliates, and highlights packages will run Saturday nights on both NBC and the Spanish-language Telemundo.

Kazushi Sakuraba (25-12-1) has replaced Melvin Manhoef and takes on Zelg Galesic (9-4) at next week’s DREAM.12 event. Galesic, a Croatian striker sometimes billed as “Little Cro Cop,” looks to rebound from his Sept. 23 submission loss to Ronaldo Souza when he meets Sakuraba, who returned from a 10-month layoff and defeated boxer Rubin Williams earlier this month at DREAM.11.

Tachi Palace Fights, the reincarnation of the once-popular Palace Fighting Championships, returns for its second show on Dec. 3, and the organization has secured recent UFC fighter Xavier Foupa-Pokam (20-11), for the night’s main event. The French kickboxer takes on Mike Moreno (5-2) in a middleweight bout.

Three days before picking up a unanimous-decision win over PRIDE veteran Yuki Sasaki at Fight Festival 26 in Finland this past weekend, Sean Salmon went before the Ohio Athletic Commission and was issued a one-year administrative suspension and $2,500 fine. The suspension and fine resulted from a Sept. 2 column for a MMA Website in which Salmon, who is author of the site’s “Full-Time Fighter” blog, said he allowed opponent Allan Weickert to tap him out a June 6 NAAFS event in Ohio. The column sparked debate, and some criticized the former Ohio State wrestler for “throwing” a fight.

Referee “Big” John McCarthy was not assigned by the California State Athletic Commission to work the UFC 104 event. McCarthy, a California native, has been re-licensed in the state since November 2008, after returning from a yearlong retirement to pursue broadcasting opportunities. McCarthy has refereed and judged at multiple events in California this year.

Tokimitsu Ishizawa (1-4-1) takes on Katsuyori Shibata (3-6-1) at DREAM.12 set for Oct. 25 at Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan. Ishizawa, better known as the Japanese professional wrestler Kendo Kashin, takes his first MMA fight in nearly three years. The K-1 HERO’S veteran does have a 2000 PRIDE victory over Ryan Gracie. He meets fellow wrestler Shibata, who’s fought throughout Japan and recently snapped a 0-6-1 snap with a unanimous-decision win over Ikuhisa Minowa at DREAM.8.

UFC veteran Diego Saraiva (13-8-1) looks for his fifth win in seven fights when he takes on Yagin (13-3-1), a longtime SuperBrawl fighter who’s riding a five-fight win streak at Tachi Palace Fights’ second show on Dec. 3.

The former PRIDE and UFC fighter Akihiro Gono meets SpiritMC veteran Yoon Young Kim (12-4) at the upcoming show for World Victory Road’s Sengoku 11th Battle. Sengoku 11th Battle takes place Nov. 7 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan. The event airs in North America on HDNet.

Anthony Pettis was recently forced out of his lightweight bout with Rob McCullough (17-5 MMA, 8-3 WEC). McCullough will face WEC newcomer Karen Darabedyan (8-1 MMA, 0-0 WEC) at next month’s WEC 44 event. The show takes place at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, and the night’s four-fight main card airs on Versus.

UFC Middleweight veteran Jordan Radev won his fight against Alexander Shlemenko via KO at 4:27 in the first round on Saturday. Radev improved his record to 21-4.

Doug Marshall extended his winning streak to four fights with a first-round knockout against “KO Kid” Keith Berry at Pure Combat “Fearless” on Saturday at the International Agri-Center. Marshall, a former World Extreme Cagefighting light heavyweight champion, looked to be in trouble early in the first round. Berry unloaded on his feet, landing vicious combos, until Marshall took over midway through the round.

Assuerio SIlva, who lost three times in the UFC, lost again Saturday in Brazil. He suffered his 8th career loss against Geronimo dos Santos via TKO (punches) just 61 seconds into their fight held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Sengoku middleweight grand prix semi-finalist Siyar Bahadurzada posted his second win in as many fights, as he defeated Polish standout Robert Jocz by majority decision. The defeat snapped Jocz’s 10-fight winning streak.

With Staples Center booked with an NBA game, the “UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun” weigh-ins, set for Friday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. PT local time (7 p.m. ET), will take place at the L.A. Live Event Deck. The event is free and open to the public.

“UFC 104 Countdown: Machida vs. Shogun,” airs on Oct. 22 (1 p.m. ET/PT) and Oct. 24 (6 p.m. ET/PT) on Spike Tv.

Leading Shooto promoter Sustain announced Sunday that longtime Shooto fan favorite and former 143-pound Pacific Rim champion Rumina Sato will fight Joe Warren at Vale Tudo Japan 2009. Sato is coming off of a first-round TKO loss to Shooto 143-pound champion Takeshi Inoue in May’s Shooto Tradition Final. Warren is also coming into VTJ off of a recent submission loss to Dream featherweight champion Bibiano Fernandes at Dream 11 earlier this month.

DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis (12-3) takes on Myeon Ho Bae (8-4) in a non-title bout at next week’s DREAM.12 that takes place on Oct. 25 at Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan.

Undefeated UFC veteran Tom Murphy returned to competition for the first time in more than a year, as he submitted Jason Cecil with a rear-naked choke. The 34-year-old Murphy, who defeated former TKO champion Icho Larenas at UFC 58, has scored all five of his wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission.

Former UFC Middleweight Thales Leites has officially signed on to join the Middleweight ranks in the Maximum Fighting Championship. In all likelihood, the standout Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace will make his debut with the organization at MFC 23: Unstoppable on Dec. 4

In a welterweight bout that took place in Enoch, Alberta, “The Ultimate Fighter Season 4″ castmember Pete Spratt took out rising prospect Nathan Gunn with a brutal knockout 4:19 into the second round. Spratt threw a right uppercut that sent Gunn crashing face-first into the canvas.

HDNet will re-air DREAM.11 this Friday, Oct. 9, at 10 p.m. ET following this week’s new episode of “Inside MMA.” DREAM.11, which took place at the Yokohama Arena in Japan, featured the conclusion of the organization’ s featherweight grand prix, a lightweight title match and the semifinals of the open-weight “Super Hulk” tournament.

Controversial UFC fighter Junie Browning was arrested Tuesday night and accused of assaulting three nurses at St. Rose Dominican Hospital’s Siena campus in Henderson, Nev. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, citing a police report, Browning was taken to the hospital after taking 16 pills of Klonopin, an anti-anxiety drug, “in an attempt to harm himself.” “The Ultimate Fighter 8″ cast member reportedly faces three counts of battery on a health care provider.

After recently regulating MMA to mirror Las Vegas rules in May of 2008, the UFC will finally be making it’s way to the beautiful Arizona desert sometime in 2010. UFC President Dana White confirmed the news in an interview with ULTMMA.com during a recent trip to “The Grand Canyon State”.

Fedor Emelianenko and his partner Marina were married recently in their hometown of Stary Oskol at the church of St. Nicholas. The two first created their relationship in 2006 before making the bond official this afternoon.

Andre Winner (10-3-1), who lost in The Ultimate Fighter Finale 9 to Ross Pearson, will look to pick up his first UFC victory when he faces Season 8 Veteran of the show, Roli Delgado (8-4-1) at UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera. The event is set for November 14, airs on Spike TV, and the fight is slated for the undercard.

Kansas City-area fighter Eric Marriott (15-0) kept his perfect record intact with a unanimous-decision win over former UFC fighter Ryan Roberts (8-7). Roberts lost to Marcus Aurelio in 16 seconds at UFC Fight Night of April 2008.

Veteran fighter Jason Guida (18-21) snapped a five-fight losing streak and scored a major upset by defeating former UFC and World Victory Road fighter Logan Clark (11-4) in just seven seconds at Saturday’s “Fight Nation” event in Minnesota. Guida’s opening two-punch barrage brought a quick stop the night’s main event.

MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba (24-12-1) was announced as a late addition to Tuesday’s DREAM.11 event by the Japanese-based organization. An opponent for “The Gracie Hunter” has not yet been named.

In a bit of additional card-shuffling, lightweight Daisuke Nakamura was moved to the promotion’s Oct. 25 event, DREAM.12.

Antonio Mckee successfully defeated WEC Veteran Carlo Prater via unanimous decision at MFC 22: Payoff. The fight was originally set to be for the Lightweight Title held by McKee but Prater failed to make weight thus forcing the bout to be change to a 3 Round 5 minute affair.
