The Two Sheds Review: UFC 107 Penn v Sanchez – DVD Review

July 12th, 2010 twoshed No comments

This is going to be one of those strange events for me, as I’ve been asked to review a DVD release of a pay-per-view I’d already reviewed. The release in question is the two disc UFC 107, headlined by B.J. Penn defending his Lightweight title against Diego Sanchez.

Disc one is where you’ll find the fights. First up are the preliminary bouts, beginning with Kevin Burns against T.J. Grant in the welterweight division. An interesting back and forth battle saw Burns drop Grant early on. But Grant came back well with some good ground work.

An inadvertent low blow from Grant gave Burns a brief rest period, but it didn’t do him much good when Grant connected with a big right that sent him down. Grant followed him, with the referee stepping in to give Grant the TKO win.

The welterweight action continued with Demarques Johnson and Edgar Garcia. Another great back and forth affair with Garcia looking like he was going to get the submission early on with a Peruvian neck tie, which Johnson was able to escape from.

But despite being rocked Johnson came back strongly, hitting Garcia with an up kick which set up the triangle choke for the submission win.

It was up to the middleweight division next as Rousimar Palhares faced Lucio Linhares.

So what do you get when you put two BJJ black belts against each other. A great ground fight.

Palhares put on a great offensive display in the first round, with Linhares countering with a great defensive display.

Palhares looked a little gassed in the second round but he did enough to once again show his mastery of leg locks by getting the submission win with a heel hook.

It was back down to welterweight for the next fight as Johny Hendricks took on Ricardo Funch.

The first fight on the show to go the distance was a very cagey fight to begin with, but as the fight progressed Hendricks began to dominate more and more. Everything he did was impressive, and it came as no surprise when he got the unanimous decision.

Matt Wiman against Shane Nelson in the lightweight division was next.

This was a scrappy affair to begin with, with Wiman complaining about an eye poke early on. But as the fight went on it became a very entertaining affair, with Wiman looking the stronger throughout.

There was another unfortunate incident early in the third when Wiman caught Nelson with an accidental low kick. He ended the fight strongly though, and it was enough to earn him the unanimous decision.

The final preliminary saw Alan Belcher face Wilson Gouveia in a catchweight bout, made at 195.

Nothing but striking in this one, no ground work to speak of as both men basically tried to beat each other up, with Belcher connecting with a right to the body and following up with an uppercut. It wasn’t long before the referee stepped in and gave Belcher the impressive TKO win.

The main show began with heavyweight action as Paul Buentello took on Stefan Struve.

I really enjoyed this fight first time round, and it was just as good second time round. The highlight for me was when Buentello cut the giant Dutchman down in the second, dropping him with a big right as he telegraphed his flying knee.

As well as that we saw some great ground work in the first and great kicks in the third from Struve, which was enough to earn him the majority decision.

The lightweight fight between ESPN’s best MMA analyst Kenny Florian and Clay Guida was up next.

These two put in a great effort, and both were bloodied up by the end of the first, with Guida the worse of the two.

The end came in the second when a big Florian right to the jaw sent Guida crashing. A rear naked choke later and Florian had the submission win.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks that Guida needs a haircut?

The welterweight clash between Jon Fitch and Mike Pierce followed.

Now considering that Fitch’s five previous fights had all gone the distance it was pretty obvious how this one was going to play out.

It was a workmanlike performance from Fitch, solid and not overly spectacular, controlling the fight for the most part until the final few moments, when Pierce rocked him with a left hook and finished the fight with a flurry.

No surprise from the judges as Fitch took the unanimous decision.

Brock Lesnar’s best buddy Frank Mire took on French kickboxer Cheick Kongo in the heavyweight division next.

The blink and you’ll miss it affair of the show. After a brief feeling out period Mir connected with a big left that sent Kongo down, and after a guillotine choke Kongo was out of it, giving Mir the very impressive submission win.

Then it was on to the main event as Diego Sanchez challenged B.J. Penn for the Lightweight Championship.

Mike Goldberg said it best when he said that Penn is great at making good fighters look ordinary, and that was certainly the case here.

From the very beginning of the fight, when Penn knocked Sanchez down you knew that he wasn’t going down easily. His striking was superior, his take down defence was superb, and Sanchez just couldn’t handle him.

Penn looked as fresh as a daisy when the fifth round started, while Sanchez’s face looked a mess, and it was in this particular round that Penn finally finished his man off. The doctor was called in after Penn opened up a cut above Sanchez’s left eye, and he quickly stopped the fight. This was Penn at his best, and it was a joy to behold.

Disc two is where you’ll find the special features, pre and post fight stuff. You know what I mean.

In conclusion – this is the first UFC DVD release I’ve reviewed since UFC 78, and my opinion of them hasn’t really changed.

While the fight action is great, there are little things that missing here, and while I can understand that the fighters entrances are, for the most part, left out so they don’t have to pay royalties for the music they use, there are other things that could easily have been included.

For instance, we don’t see the initial introductions from Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan. Most of Bruce Buffer’s ring introductions are also cut, except for the two feature fights. That’s a shame because he really is the best in the world at what he does.

So in all, good fights, but missing those little touches that make UFC shows so special.

The Two Sheds Review: UFC 107 Penn v Sanchez

December 14th, 2009 twoshed No comments

Ufc107poster2It was the final show of the year for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, as B.J. Penn aimed to cement his place as the top lightweight in the world against his latest challenger, Diego Sanchez in UFC 107: Penn v Sanchez, shown live here in Britain in the early hours of this past Sunday morning on ESPN, with Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan handling commentary duties.

The broadcast began with Paul Buentello facing Stefan Struve. This heavyweight encounter proved to be an entertaining opener. Struve used his nine inch height advantage to good effect in the first as it looked like he was going to get a submission with a body triangle. But that was the end of the ground fighting as the remainder of the fight saw both men duke it out. Buentello unleashed with a hell of a right in the second, connecting just as Struve came in with an attempted flying knee. Struve didn’t let this stop him though as he targeted Buentello’s leg throughout the third, and it was this that saw the Dutchman through, earning him the unanimous decision from the judges. A good enough fight, but I couldn’t help but feel for Buentello a little. His second round shot will definitely go down as one of the moments of the year.

Then it was on to lightweight action, with Kenny Florian facing Clay Guida. This was one of the fights that I was really looking forward to. Guida came out at the start of the first like a little ball of energy, and Florian was more than able to keep up with him. Florian’s elbows soon caused damage to Guida’s head, with the referee stopping the fight momentarily so the doctor could check the deep cut. The decisive moment came in the second. Florian dropped Guida with a big right, and seconds later the fight was over, Guida tapping to Florian’s rear naked choke. This certainly didn’t disappoint, and it was great to see Florian back to winning ways again.

Welterweight action followed, with Jon Fitch taking on Mike Pierce. Although a technically sound battle at times, this one won’t go down in history as a heart stopping classic. This one saw Fitch getting a few take downs, and going for Pierce’s back, with some good combinations later on from both men. So with the fight going the three round distance the judges were called on as they gave the fight to Fitch. Okay I suppose, but not exactly enthralling.

Then it was time for the big boys to play as Frank Mir faced Cheick Kongo in the heavyweight division in the proverbial blink and you’ll miss it affair of the show. The two big men squared up to each other early and it wasn’t long before Mir’s big left sent the Frenchman crashing down to the mat. Mir quickly followed up with a deep guillotine, and as Kongo faded in unconsciousness the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. To say that this was an impressive performance by Mir would be an understatement. The former champion was awesome, and is back in the title mix.

Catchweight action, pitting Alan Belcher against Wilson Gouveia, followed. This filler material was almost spoiled by ESPN, who cut to a commercial as soon as the fight started, which meant we missed the first minute or so. But what we did see was a good boxing performance from Belcher as he took the stoppage win. Then ESPN cut away to another break just as the decision was being announced. Just when we Brits thought that this was a thing of the past!

The main event saw B.J. Penn defending the UFC Lightweight title against Diego Sanchez. If you ever wanted an example of how a champion is light years above all of his contenders then you saw it here. From the moment he rocked Sanchez in the opening moments of the first round, Penn put on a master class, proving once again that he’s the best he is at what he does. It was a joy to behold as Penn dominated, and as the fight went into the final round it was only a matter of time. A big right kick opened up a nasty cut on Sanchez’s forehead, and that was it. The doctor checked him over, and the referee stopped the fight. A truly awesome performance by Penn.

The final filler material saw Demarques Johnson facing Edgar Garcia at welterweight. This was a good way to end the show, and featured some nice back and forth action. Both men looked like they could get the win, until Johnson, from out of nowhere, locked in a triangle choke for the submission victory.

In conclusion – the Fitch/Pierce fight aside, UFC 107 proved to be a very good show. B.J. Penn’s performance was awesome, and Frank Mir wasn’t that far behind him. But I’m left to wonder just who will challenge Penn next?

So in short a very good show, a perfect way for the UFC to end what was another great year. Nice work all round.

PREVIEW: UFC 107 BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez

UFC 107 - Penn vs Sanchez

UFC 107 - Penn vs Sanchez

December 12th 2009, FedEx Forum, Memphis, Tenn.

Here is a brief preview of the event broadcasting live tonight on ESPN and ESPN HD on the Sky and Virgin Media platforms.

B.J. “The Prodigy” Penn vs. Diego “The Nightmare” Sanchez

So who is your money on in this lightweight title contest? The odds on favourite in the UFC 107 main event is veteran Penn but in the world of MMA anything can happen. If I was a betting man Penn would be the fighter I would choose to place a bet on. The Hawaii native is the man with the tools needed for the job, knock-out boxing, awesome Ju Jitsu skills packaged up with experience.

As has been discussed frequently on the internet forums in recent times the UFC fighters wearing the belts around their waists look to remain dominant for some time, although questions look to be answered with light-heavyweight champ since his controversial points win over Shogun Rua. However I don’t see BJ leaving the octagon minus the strap.

Sanchez is an overwhelming force inside the octagon but versus veteran title holder BJ Penn he could well make a mistake rushing in, giving Penn the opening to take advantage of in the heat of cage combat. A question to be answered in this championship showdown is whether The Nightmare has the conditioning required to go the full 5 rounds as the challenger. Tonight we shall find out.

Cheick Kongo vs. Frank Mir

Both heavyweight fighters are on the comeback trail, hoping to avenge their summertime losses. Mir lost to Lesnar at UFC 100 and Kongo to Velasquez at UFC 99. The humble Kongo intends to end the reign of the big mouthed American.  A contrast in characters here I feel. Taking on big Brock many UFC fans booed Lesnar and cheered Mir, partly because of arrogance displayed by the former WWE star and partly due to him being a former pro wrestler. In this match-up it’s clear Mir is the one with all the swagger. Despite Mir not endearing himself, I’m picking him to beat Kongo via tap-out within the 2nd round.

The “UFC’s Ultimate 100: Greatest Fights,” a collection of the MMA promotion’s 100 greatest fights as decided on by a fan vote, will soon be available on DVD. Unlike the five-part Spike TV series, which showed just clips of the 100 contests, the new DVD collection will offer all 100 fights in their entirety. Anchor Bay Entertainment, the current distributor of UFC DVD’s, today announced that the eight-DVD set will be available on Nov. 10 for a suggested retail price of $99.97 (you can pre-order UFC’s Ultimate 100 on DVD at Amazon.com for $55.99).

“HDNet will continue to showcase the premiere MMA promotion in Canada to millions of fans in North America,” announced Andrew Simon, the CEO of HDNet Fights. HDNet and Maximum Fighting Championship have extended their agreement to continue broadcasting MFC events exclusively on HDNet into 2010. The multi-fight deal will commence on December 4 with the HDNet broadcast of MFC 23 live from the River Cree Resort and Casino in Alberta, Canada.

REMOVED!
Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin has been removed from the UFC 108 page on UFC.com. Not a good sign. Todd Duffee is also off UFC 107, so another one bites the dust.

MMA NOTES-
In the Pancrase “Changing Tour 6″ main event, Yuki Kondo and Yuji Hisamatsu fought to a stalemate after three rounds in what was Kondo’s 80th professional mixed martial arts match. The event occurred at the Differ Ariake Arena in Tokyo on Sunday. The 34-year-old Kondo — a Pride Fighting Championships and UFC veteran, now holds a record of 50-23-7.

Dennis Hallman (41-12-2 MMA, 1-3 UFC) vs. John Howard (12-4 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in a welterweight battle is slated for the preliminary card of The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale. The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale is scheduled for Dec. 5 at The Palms Casino & Resort in Las Vegas.

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett was granted a second extension Monday for an appeals hearing the fighter had requested after the California State Athletic Commission denied his re-licensure in late July due to a positive pre-test for an anabolic steroid. The new hearing will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

A 185-pound bout between newcomer Lucio Linhares (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Rousimar Palhares (9-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is signed to occur on the undercard of UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez.

The Maximum Fighting Championship has taken the necessary steps to strip light heavyweight champion Trevor Prangley (21-5) of his title and release him from his contract. The move was required when Prangley violated his contract by signing with two smaller organizations while under contract with the MFC. Prangley’s management was informed of the violation after the first offense but Prangley agreed to fight again outside of the MFC in blatant disregard of his signed exclusive contact.
