Alex Reid vs. Tom Watson: Humble Pie?

October 18th, 2010 Duane No comments

British Association of Mixed Martial Arts.

Following Alex Reid’s performance at Birmingham’s NIA, Saturday September 25 , against BAMMA Middleweight Champion  Tom ‘Kong’ Watson, humble pie is what a lot of people will be eating, who slated him as a fighter.

Reid and Watson both put on an epic performance, in what many fans and pundits alike are calling Britain’s version of  Griffin v Bonnar. Brilliant fight, well done to both fighters and BAMMA for matching them up. Had me on the edge of my seat all the way through.

Now it’s clear to see why he’s called The Reidernator – he takes the punishment but just keeps going like an unstoppable machine.

KNOCKOUT VIEWING FIGURES!

The figures are now in, Reid v Watson was clearly a huge draw for BAMMA and Bravo. Knock-out viewing figures just released show BAMMA 4 gained the highest ever viewing figures for a sporting event on the channel, plus some of the highest viewing figures Bravo has ever seen.

Live coverage of the main event between Tom Watson and Alex Reid at 10pm-11pm on Saturday 25th September delivered the following figures:

A Peak Audience of 835K adults during the live fight

Averaged 598k adults across the entire show

58% 16-34, 33% ABC1 and 61% male / 39% female

During the live fight, BAMMA was listed as a tweet trend on Twitter and even peaked the interest of the current WBA World Heavyweight boxing champion David Haye who tweeted:

“One of the most entertaining fights I’ve seen all year! Huge respect to both warriors, can’t wait for the rematch!!”

MMA Referree Marc Goddard also tweeted:

“I have travelled the World with MMA, but what I witnessed at BAMMA between Tom Watson and Alex Reid will stay with me forever.”

And ex Celebrity Big Brother housemate and MMA fan Dane Bowers added:

“What a great event for UK MMA. BAMMA was amazing!”

BAMMA’s next event, BAMMA 5 at The Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on Saturday 4th December will feature the American heavyweight legend Bob “The Best” Sapp, former NFL, PRIDE FC and K1 superstar. BAMMA will also present a further 5 live events at arena sized venues all across the UK throughout 2011.

So it’s onwards and upwards for BAMMA and the UK MMA scene.

UCMMA 15: Dave O’Donnell Interview

September 15th, 2010 Duane No comments

Match-maker extraordinaire: Dave O'Donnell

Ahead of UCMMA 15: Showdown, taking place at London’s Troxy, this Saturday – September 18, we were fortunate to grab a few words with match-maker extraordinaire and ever popular face of Ultimate Challenge Dave O’Donnell.

The interview works well as an introduction to those less familiar with UCMMA, plus in an incite into the world of the larger than life cage-fighting promoter.

What’s your current favourite song?

WE NO SPEAK AMERICANO

YOLANDA BE COOL VS D CUP

How do you relax in your spare time?

- As always I spent the whole weekend in my magical garden, watering plants and working out new ideas – it just really chills me out.

For MMA fans new to Ultimate Challenge, can you tell us who are your current champions and which upcoming competitors to look out for?

Current champions are:

Neil Grove – HW

Jimi Manuwa – LH

Mark Weir – MW

WW – (Maguire V Santana – to be decided this Sat at UCMMA 15)

LW – Michael Pastou

FW – Dave Lee

Look out for Nick ‘Head Hunter’ Chapman, who’s a great ambassador for the sport plus Djo Lema.

UCMMA 15: Showdown is loaded with 4 title fights, can you tell us a little about each one, so the readers know what to expect?

Smith V Sabet: This Superfight Title is a question of honour rematch. Kiane is seeking revenge, as last time he fought injured but this time he’s 100 per cent animal and ready for what Ben has to throw at him. Ben has said it’s just another day in the office for him and that the only reason he took the rematch is to set the record straight – Ben’s saying injury or no injury, it’s going be the same outcome. These are two big guys with honour at stake and only one of them is going to leave that cage with their head held high.

Pastou V Olivier – Olivier has been around since the beginning of time, he first fought on Cage Rage 1 and was the former undisputed FW champ at Cage Rage. He is now stepping up a weight to prove that he’s back bigger and stronger – the only thing that will be the deciding factor is that Pastou (who walks around at 84 kilos and cuts to an amazing 70) will be far too big and strong for the likes of poor little Robbie.

Maguire V Santana – Alberto Mina, our former WW champ has relinquished his title, as another one of our champs has moved to Bellator in the US (it seems that all our UCMMA champs do well – is it luck or is it the fact that we can pick a winner?) This will be a battle of BJJ and stamina – they are so evenly matched the one with the biggest heart will take this title.

Djo Lema V Elijah Grinell – these guys have sick striking and magical skills – but let’s see if they can pull it out of the bag on the night because Djo Lema is the real deal and you’ll need more than magic to beat him.

UCMMA cards feature UK1 kick-boxing bouts, I’m a big fan of these fast-paced exciting fights, it offers variety. Do you feel this makes UCMMA unique?

It’s not just the UK-1 fights that make UCMMA unique – it’s the whole show. It’s the production values, the atmosphere, the fighters – the entire experience which makes it a night to remember. We continue to have sell out shows that start on time and run smoothly – for pure fan entertainment. With dancing girls, fighter promos, entertainment and celebrities – not forgetting the amazing fights – UCMMA is unstoppable.

Something else unique about UCMMA 15 is for the first time ever fellow journalist – Mark Amor-Carling is to compete inside the cage. From what I hear Mark is a very brave man entering into MMA combat with just 12 weeks training. How has he got on in that time?

Mark has done extremely well – his attitude to pain and hard training is ‘the more the merrier’ – I’ve never known a guy to be more dedicated and make more MMA friends in such a short time. Will he win – who knows – but one things’ for sure – it’ll be the fight of his life.

Can you tell us the charity the fight is aid of ?

Carling’s raising money for the Kiyan Prince foundation - http://www.kiyan.org/ which was set up by former boxing champ Mark Prince.

Which match-up are you predicting to steal the show on September 18?

A really hard question – as every fight we put on has a lot of meaning. I don’t think one fight will steal the show but at least 4 will. If you’re unlucky enough not to get a ticket – tune into Sky Sports on Wednesday 22nd September to watch the drama unfold.

Former UCMMA fighters Alex Reid and Tom ‘Kong’ Watson are fighting this month for a different promotion, who do you predict winning?

A lot of people write off Alex but I’ve known him for years and have put him up against the toughest fighters the world has seen – everyone close to him knows that he’s been training for this fight – but it’s the first time that Alex will have gone 5 x 5 mins so that could be the deciding factor. I never like to sit on the fence, but this time I’m perched very high.

Do you see either fighter returning to compete for Ultimate Challenge in the near future?

I’ve spoken to both camps but who knows – this is the fight game. I’ve learnt one thing in my time, fighters come and go but the promotion will stay strong.

A-Team or The Expendables?

I’m proper old school so I liked The Expendables – but for entertainment value the A-Team just nicked it. But I will say one thing – it’s fantastic to see MMA fighters headline in both films- you couldn’t ask for more, MMA is mainstream!

Bisping or Akiyama?

Bisping – you’ve always got to go with your home boys.

Lesnar or Velasquez?

Lesnar – I like his style.

VIDEO: Alex Reid vs Tom Watson Live On Bravo

September 10th, 2010 Duane No comments

This one seemed to have slipped past me: According to this Bravo promo video for  BAMMA 4 and confirmed at BAMMA.com, the middleweight marquee Championship fight of Alex Reid versus Tom ‘Kong’ Watson fight goes out LIVE on Bravo (channel 123) on September 25.

This is huge news for UK MMA. We don’t usually get treated to live fight cards on home soil, unless it’s the UFC events on subscription channel ESPN. Bravo comes as part of  the standard Sky package. The fight should do good viewing figures, many will be tuning in for the first time to see Celebrity Big Brother 7 winner and husband to Katie Price -- Alex Reid slug it out inside the cage.

Added bonus of being able to watch the fight live is it makes it more fun if you’ve placed a bet on the outcome. Be interesting to see what prices bookmakers are offering on either fighter.

Who’s your pick, The Reidenator or Kong?

Keep an eye on Bravo TV and BAMMA.com - as there are plans to air the rest of the card too, at a later date.

BAMMA4: Tom Watson Interview

August 27th, 2010 Duane 2 comments

BAMMA champ: Tom 'Kong' Watson

Thanks to that marvellous idea – Facebook, I was fortunate enough to ask Tom ‘Kong’ Watson a few questions, gaining an incite into the world of the BAMMA Middleweight Champion.

What’s your current favourite song?

Cloudburst by Eric Whitacre.

How do you relax between training?

I relax eating flavoured cheese.. French is the best.. Roquefort,  and sitting in the hot tub smoking a Cuaba figurado. Magnifique.

Tabloid rumours circulating at the moment are of your BAMMA 4 opponent and challenger to your middleweight crown, Alex Reid having done a deal  to appear on Ultimate Big Brother for large sum of money. How do you feel about him doing it, considering the timing?

The Reidenator should and will go into the house for around 2 weeks. Most of his sparring will already be complete. With the media attention on him presently I actually believe he can get in great shape (cardio wise) being in the house. What else is there to do when your locked in a house. Unless it is the Foursome House on Playboy.

What impact do you feel being booked to fight Celebrity Big Brother 7 winner and husband of Katie Price has on your career?

It has given me the chance to defend my belt at BAMMA.

In the previous Bravo programme following Alex in training, he tried martial arts not specific to an MMA contest. Do you think he’ll be more focussed training-wise this time around? He’s been pictured with Chuck Liddell…

Who have you been training with? Where?

What does a picture mean? I’ve been pictured with Tamara Witmer, does that mean I’m sleeping with her… I’m training in Montreal with my coaches here Eric O’Keefe, Firass Zahabi, Bruno Fernandes, Howard Grant, Mr Chaimberg and the squad at Bikram yoga. The previous Bravo filming was done much earlier than people realise. Alex wasnt rolling around trying new styles the month before he was due to fight, the show was filmed at the beginning of the year. He’ll be at London Shoot as usual training hard.

You have a fight booked for MFC in Canada, September 10, against TUF veteran Jesse Taylor. Is it wise to fight so close to your BAMMA middleweight title defence? Or do you feel keeping active in MMA competition gives you an edge over Alex?

No my wish is to eradicate poverty and suffering worldwide, fighting Jesse taylor is a chance for me to test my skills up against one of the top guys in the world. BAMMA isnt even relevant until after that fight.

Are there any specific areas you have trained in preparation for the September 25 showdown at the NIA, Birmingham? Which areas do you feel Reid’s a threat?

I train the same for every fight, I just simply try to improve in every area and make sure I am ready for whatever happens in the fight.

What is your prediction for the fight?

I will leave the cage BAMMA champion.

Where do you see yourself ranking internationally?

Maybe top 50. There are still many guys in the middleweight division who are rightly above me.

A-Team or The Expendables?

Expendable as the A-Team would have been better with Rashad as BA.

Couture or Toney?

James Toney… Come on this isnt UFC 1?? Really…

Penn or Edgar?

Baby Jay, but I think the fights the same as last time just this time Penn gets the nod from the judges.

Do you have any websites you recommend the fans visit?

Check out www.tomkongwatson.com and from there you can follow me on twitter and Facebook. Check out Vas.tv for innovative footwear, Headrush for the latest styles in MMA, Tapout because its Tapout baby and go gamble at Full Tilt Poker for the chance to become a legend.

UCMMA 14: Invincible

August 6th, 2010 Duane No comments

UCMMA 14: Invincible

What with all the hype for UFC 117 this weekend, time has gotten the better of me to type up an entry for UCMMA 14: Invincible – the mammoth fight card happening on home soil.
There is a good chance tickets will still be available, so go see the live event, this Saturday in London, then watch Silva vs Sonnen on ESPN afterwards.
If unable to make it along, catch it on Sky Sports, Wednesday August 11.
Read the low-down in the press release below, including words from Dave O’Donnell:
UCMMA 14: Invincible - August 7th, Troxy, London
· VALINTINO PETRESCU V JIMI MANUWA – Title Fight
· Featuring: FRANCIS HEAGNEY, JAMAINE FACEY, MARK WEIR & MARK POTTER
· Debuting: IAIN MARTELL & JOHN PHILLIPS
· Broadcast on Sky Sports: Wednesday 11th August, 10pm
(London, 19th July) UCMMA, the UK’s Leading MMA Organisation, presents UCMMA 14th: Invincible at Troxy, London on Saturday 7th August.
Featuring the mouth-watering  title fight that everyone has been waiting for –  undefeated UCMMA Light Heavyweight Champion Jimi ‘Poster Boy’ Manuwa V the stone faced and equally undefeated Valentino Petrescu.  Both previously unconquerable, one man must leave the Cage having tasted defeat.
UCMMA veteran Mark ‘The Wizard’ Weir takes on John Phillips in a hotly anticipated Middle Weight clash, crowd favourite Jamaine Facey will be squaring up to Edgelson Lua, Francis Heagney will be looking to take out Brad Wheeler and the UK’s hottest unlicensed boxer Mark ‘The Shark’ Potter faces up to Ian ‘Monster’ Hawkins – a man who wreaks devastation whenever he enters the Cage.
Dave O’Donnell said:
“This event definitely has the right name. There are a lot of fighters on this card who actually believe they are invincible. Jimi Manuwa and Valentino Petrescu are both unbeaten; Giorgio Andrews, Mark Potter– both un-beaten.  These guys have never tasted defeat and have no appetite for it.  Other guys who do know the bitter taste of defeat are Jamaine Facey, John Phillips and John Kelly, but they’ve vowed never to look back and are now ready to prove that they too are invincible.”
“Mark Potter is the best pound for pound heavyweight in the country, but with Ian Hawkins standing at 6’6 and not afraid of the Devil himself, this promises to be a stand up war. At the other end of the spectrum, Edge Lua, a quiet but pitiless Mixed Martial Artist faces up to the extremely vocal and talented Jamaine Facey. This fight has already set tongues wagging … “.
“After Jake Bostwick’s amazing win over Denniston Sutherland he decided to drop to Middleweight. Now, facing up to Earl Brown, who went an amazing two rounds with Paul Cahoon, Jake will be looking to take out Earl quicker than Ben Craggy to prove he’s at the very top of his game.”
“This card is stacked with powerful fighters who are determined to prove they’re invincible, so it’s certain to live up to the hype.”
Full Card:
VALINTINO PETRESCU V JIMI MANUWA (LHW TITLE)
JOHN PHILLIPS V MARK WEIR (MW)
EDGELSON LUA V JAMAINE FACEY (WW)
BRAD WHEELER V FRANCIS HEAGNEY (LW)
